Leicester City 2 Gillingham 0

It was a good day for manager Micky Adams who not only watched his impressive Leicester side demolish Gillingham but also welcomed back his Scottish international full-back Callum Davidson.

Davidson had not kicked a ball in anger since Dennis Wise had broken his cheekbone in a hotel room fracas during a pre-season tour of Finland.

And the biggest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for Davidson when he came on as a 69th minute substitute to a standing ovation.

And with the closure of the transfer window until January, Adams knows that his midfield general, Muzzy Izzet, will be staying at the Walkers Stadium to help consolidate City's promotion challenge.

The first half was dominated by skilful Leicester who scored in the 10th minute when Gerry Taggart headed an Alan Rogers corner across the face of the goal for Junior Lewis to nod home from close range.

City's domination was rewarded three minutes before the break when Brian Deane headed on Ian Walker's long clearance to Paul Dickov who showed great control before crashing home a right-foot shot from 22 yards into the left-hand corner of the goal.

But for three glaring misses by second-half substitute Trevor Benjamin City might easily have heaped much more humiliation on the opposition.

But as it was Benjamin's inability in front of goal allowed Gillingham to mount a late rally but they never produced the cutting edge needed to test City's solid defence.

Afterwards City boss Adams said: "It's great to get three wins out of three at the new stadium, but we must not get complacent and think all we have to do is turn up to collect the points.

"Having said that it can only boost our confidence."

GIllingham player-manager Andy Hessenthaler added: "They are the best side we've played this season. Their passing and movement was first class and they will be there, or very close at the end of the season."
