Leicester City 1-1 Crystal Palace

Sven Goran-Eriksson's men started tonight's contest in ninth place - five points behind Leeds United in the final play-off spot. And, with the season coming to a dramatic climax, they knew that three points were vital if they were to keep their play-off hopes alive.

And yet, following a desperatley frustrating evening that saw the Foxes fall short of gaining that all important win, Eriksson may well accept his side were not at their best today, but be pleased his side are still in the hunt.

After all, the point sees them close the gap to sixth place to just four points after Simon Grayson's Leeds lost 2-1 at Derby County.

Millwall's failure to win three points at home to Bristol City also favours the Foxes.

Eriksson decided to name an unchanged side for tonight's clash after witnessing his players brush aside Burnley in emphatic fashion on Saturday.

But, any hopes of a repeat performance were soon dashed when Palace's Sean Scannell fired a 25-yard effort past Weale and into the roof of the net.

The goal was certainly against the run of play, for Leicester had created some promising chances early in the tie - but the opening goal seemed to sink the Foxes.

A spell of Palace pressure followed and the away side could have easily doubled their lead, but the likes of Sol Bamba and Ben Mee showed their quality on more than one occasion to keep City in the tie.

Leicester did claw their way back into the contest on the hour-mark when Matt Oakley smashed home his first goal of the season to set up a tense finale.

Yakubu and Kamara - who were so impressive last time out - lacked that crucial finish and Eriksson took action, sending on Steve Howard and Lloyd Dyer in an attempt to steal all three points at the death.

But it was not to be and Palace - who defended admirably at times - held on for a vital point that will go a long way to ensuring they remain in the Championship.

Few Leicester fans would begrudge the visitors their hard-earned point, especially when other results in the Championship mean that the draw sends the Foxes a point closer to Wembley!
