Player Ratings v Cardiff

Last updated : 20 April 2005 By Mark Maher

Ian Walker – 6

Not tested throughout the game. Poor positioning for the free kicked scored by Ardley.

Darren Kenton – 6

Defended Ok, but lacked support from Hughes on the right when attempting to get forward. Often left with little choice when in possession of the ball.

Nikos Dabizas – 6

Had a solid game at the back without being overly exerted by a weak Cardiff front line. Extremely unfortunate to be sent off after picking up a second yellow for clearly winning the ball.

Patrick McCarthy – 6

Pretty much the same as Dabizas, but committed too many fouls. He’s too ‘hands on’ with his marking of the striker when attempting to win the ball in the air.

Alan Maybury – 6

A much improved performance from Wigan, however, didn’t contribute much going forward. Dealt with Jobi McAnuff well in general.

Stephen Hughes – 7*

Looked the classiest player on the pitch, however, he didn’t maintain his width often enough, which didn’t help Kenton.

Lilian Nalis – 6

Played some nice passes at times, but his decision making is too slow when in possession of the ball, which led to a few attacking forays losing momentum.

Gareth Williams – 5

An energetic first half performance was cancelled out by a lacklustre second. He seemed to hide when the going got tough, often sticking to his marker, making him unavailable to receive the ball.

Danny Tiatto – 6

Another player who upped his performance from Saturday’s debacle. Plenty of energy and put some crunching tackles in. Maintained a bit more width this time, but nowhere near enough to stretch the opposition.

David Connolly – 6

Lively in the first half and caused Cardiff plenty of problems with his movement. Fairly ineffective in the second half as the service for him gradually declined in quality.

Dion Dublin - 6

Refreshing to see a striker win the ball in the air on a regular basis. However, his first touch and distribution was a bit on the wayward side.

Substitutes:

Richard Stearman – 6
Keith Gillespie – 5
Mark de Vries - 5
