Manchester United Consider Shock Re-Signing of Jonny Evans on Free Transfer

Manchester United are weighing up the prospect of re-signing Leicester City defender Jonny Evans in the summer, as the Northern Irish defender approaches the end of his current contract with the Foxes.

The 32-year-old left Old Trafford to join West Bromwich Albion in 2015, before signing for Leicester in 2018 for a measly fee of £3.5m, following the Baggies' relegation from the Premier League.

Evans has been a regular at the heart of the Foxes' defence ever since his move to the King Power Stadium, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season and with no sign of a new deal on the horizon, England's top teams are starting to pay attention.

According to The Sun, one of those sides is former club Man Utd. The Red Devils are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in a new centre-back.

However, the Norwegian coach will only be handed a January transfer kitty of £20m, making it extremely difficult to recruit a top-class defender for that fee.

United are subsequently keeping a close eye on the developing situation of Evans at Leicester, and if he has not signed a new deal by January, the Red Devils may swoop to bring the reliable defender home.

A source within the club has also admitted that Solskjaer has 'plenty of time' for the Man Utd academy product, whose name has 'come up in conversation' over a possible transfer.

However, a source has previously told 90min that while signing a top defender is a priority in 2021, it is unlikely that an approach will be made in the January window.

Their shortlist of targets is headed Villarreal's Pau Torres, while there is also interest in Sergio Ramos should he force a move away from Real Madrid, though the Premier League's top clubs are sceptical about him moving on.
