Manchester City 2-5 Leicester: Player Ratings as Jamie Vardy Hat-Trick Helps Foxes to Extraordinary

A Jamie Vardy hat-trick helped Leicester to an unbelievable 5-2 win over Manchester City, with the result putting the Foxes top of the Premier League table.

The hosts got off to an electric start when Riyad Mahrez put them in front inside 10 minutes with a devastating strike. Vardy then levelled things up from the penalty spot for Leicester after being hauled down by Kyle Walker in the box.

After the break, Vardy put on a show. First, his audacious flick made it 2-1 and he then won and converted a second penalty to complete his trio. James Maddison put the Foxes 4-1 up with a sumptuous strike 13 minutes from time.

Nathan Aké did managed to pull one back for the Cityzens, only for Youri Tielemans to restore his side's three-goal advantage soon after - once again form the penalty spot.

Here's 90min's player ratings from a remarkable game at the Etihad Stadium...

Manchester City

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Ederson (GK) - 4/10 - Didn't save either penalty. Could he have done better for Vardy's second? Probably.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 4/10 - Ridiculously stupid decision to pull back Vardy for the penalty. Didn't improve much after that either.

Eric Garcia (CB) - 5/10 - Should have done better for Vardy's second goal and conceded a penalty. Should fit in nicely at the defensive disaster class that is Barcelona at the moment, then.

Nathan Aké (CB) - 6/10 - Scored a fine header and was not directly responsible for any of the four goals. Probably City's best defender.

Benjamin Mendy (LB) - 4/10 - Really not impressive going forward, really not impressive defensively and gave away a soft penalty. All in all, a terrible afternoon.

2. Midfielders

Fernandinho (CM) - 5/10 - Showed his age at times, allowing Leicester to surge past him on several occasions. City need to find his heir and quickly.

Rodri (CM) - 4/10 - Had a goal disallowed in the first half. Did not do very much. Time for him to start proving his worth.

Kevin De Bruyne (CM) - 5/10 - A frustrating afternoon for the Belgian. There were touches of magic here and there but he couldn't carve open the resolute Foxes.

3. Forwards

Riyad Mahrez (RW) - 7/10 - Got his side off to a perfect start with an outrageous strike against his former employers. Faded thereafter.

Raheem Sterling (ST) - 5/10 - Fed off scraps for the majority of the game. Improved slightly after moving out wide into the second half.

Phil Foden (LW) - 4/10 - Ineffectual out on the left. A very disappointing display.

4. Substitutes

Liam Delap - 5/10

Ferran Torres - 4/10

Aymeric Laporte - N/A

Leicester City

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Kasper Schmeichel (GK) - 6/10 - Had very little to do, which I bet he was not expecting before the game.

Daniel Amartey (CB) - 8/10 - Considering he hasn't played in the Premier League in about 300 years, this was a more than acceptable performance.

Jonny Evans (CB) - 8/10 - A welcome return for one of Leicester's best performers last season. Very classy defending before being substituted as a precaution.

Caglar Soyuncu (CB) - 7/10 - Authoritative and composed. He also drove his team forward and showcased his fine passing range. I bet City wished they had a player like him...

6. Wing-Backs & Midfielders

Timothy Castagne (RWB) - 8/10 - What a ball for Vardy's goal. Another great display by the Foxes' new recruit who has slotted in well at the King Power Stadium.

Nampalys Mendy (CM) - 7/10 - The Cityzens gave the Frenchman a tough test but he was more then equal to it. A couple of lovely turns.

Youri Tielemans (CM) - 7/10 - Worked incredibly hard for the team. Did not have a lot of joy going forward though but slotted his penalty confidently.

Dennis Praet (CM) - 6/10 - Struggled after an incredible start to the season. James Maddison replaced him after he picked up a knock.

James Justin (LWB) - 8/10 - Colossal defensive performances against Mahrez. Also offered something going forward.

7. Forwards

Jamie Vardy (ST) - 10/10 - Cards on the table time. Jamie Vardy is my favourite footballer of all time and games like this are why. Irresistibly brilliant in every way.

Harvey Barnes (ST) - 8/10 - Once again looked dangerous. His pace was an important asset to the counter-attacking Foxes and he maintained his discipline well.

8. Substitutes

James Maddison - 9/10

Christian Fuchs - N/A

Kelechi Iheanacho - N/A
