Leicester title win the greatest sporting story of all time - Richard Scudamore

The 5,000-1 outsiders upset the established order spectacularly to be crowned Premier League champions when Tottenham failed to beat Chelsea on Monday night.

Scudamore told the BBC: "It's probably the biggest sporting story ever and the biggest sporting achievement ever

"Nobody saw it coming and even when it was halfway through the season nobody said it could be sustained."

Leicester have been challenging at the top of the table virtually all season but winning the league seemed so improbable that they only recently became title favourites.

A draw with Manchester United on Sunday meant anything less than a win for Spurs would not be enough to keep the race alive with two games remaining.

The 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge sparked scenes of wild celebration among the players gathered at Jamie Vardy's house and the fans on the streets of Leicester, none of whom could quite believe the Foxes had won the Premier League.

Scudamore said: "We don't know what the future holds because we've all become completely hopeless at predicting anything, including the bookmakers and everybody else - because this one nobody saw coming

"So here we are, it's made mugs of all of us and that is just the most fantastic feeling.

"If the bookmakers had it at a 5,000-1 event, you would imagine you should achieve these type of things once every 5,000 years

It gives us 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years of being able to say, 'Leicester 2016, just remember Leicester 2016'."

The Premier League is used to making global headlines but there has never been anything quite like this.

Scudamore said comparing it to Sir Alex Ferguson's success with Manchester United or Arsenal's Invincibles was "comparing apples with pears".

He added: "In terms of an overall story, as an overall achievement, it is absolutely the best

"No matter what else happens we've got it to remember, we've got it in the record books

Let the statisticians prove that Leicester won the most points, they won the league, they were worthy champions and anybody else can do it."
