Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers admitted his team were not good enough in central midfield, after Southampton gained revenge for their devastating 9-0 loss at St Mary's earlier in the season.
The hosts were without Wilfred Ndidi in the anchor role and his absence was felt by Rodgers' side as they put in a laboured performance against a rejuvenated Saints.
Dennis Praet's early first-half strike did put Leicester one up just before the quarter of an hour mark, but the Foxes were uncharacteristically slack thereafter - conceding first to Stuart Armstrong, before Danny Ings' goal ten minutes from time sealed all three points for Ralph Hasenhuttl's men.
After the game, Rodgers, speaking to Leicester's official website, admitted that his side did not deserve anything from the game, conceding that his team were not good enough defensively and failed to put Southampton under enough pressure.
"The performance probably didn’t merit anything from the game," Rodgers said. "The players kept going right to the end and kept fighting.
"We haven't seen too many of those here this season. The game was very broken, there was no real fluency in the game, lots of first or second balls, but ultimately, we didn’t defend well enough.
"We didn’t press the game strong enough, or well enough, and then when we had the ball, we made too many mistakes when we had the ball. So, it looked like up until the end, it was going to be a draw, which we would have taken because we didn’t play well.
"However, they played through our midfield too easily and then they get in and get the goal, so a disappointing result for us."
The only positive for Rodgers perhaps stemmed from Praet's goal, his first in the Premier League, which came about after good work from Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy, which the Northern Irishman admitted was one of few bits of quality his team showed on the day.
"Yes, it was good, it was quick-thinking by Ayo (Pérez), he sends Jamie away, and probably one of the few times that we were able to play forward with any quality," he added.
"He shows great desire to get up there and score, Dennis. So, that gave us the lead in the game, but we weren’t really ever in control of the game and that was a disappointment."
